Yangtze Council

The Yangtze Council is a non-profit organization registered in Shanghai on 25 April 1998.The initiative for its creation grew out of discussions on cooperation for economic development between the Business and Professionals Federation of Hong Kong (BPF) and the Shanghai Municipal government.In China, the central government was moving to prioritize measures to support development in western China while, in Hong Kong, there was growing recognition among Hong Kong's business leaders that Hong Kong's role needed to evolve in line with changing and expanding opportunities in China itself.

Blending, as it does, the political strength and connections of the Shanghai Municipal government with some of Hong Kong's leading businessmen and China-investors, the Council is a unique, not-for-profit organization which draws on the business experience of Hong Kong in order to assist authorities in the Yangtze Region to improve the climate and conditions for foreign investment.

The Council also places its extensive network of contacts at the disposal of foreign investors who need to satisfy themselves that they are talking to the right people as they explore business opportunities in the Region. Some additional investor services can be arranged 'at cost' and on demand.

Where investors are also looking to explore the possibility of adding a Hong Kong partner to their business plans in China, the Council is able to assist with introductions and briefings in Hong Kong.

Nantong

Nantong, in Jiangsu province, lies on the northern bank of the Yangtze River estuary, opposite the metropolis of Shanghai.

With an administrative area covering 8,001 sq. km. and a population of 7.8 million of whom 600,000 are in the urban areas, Nantong is an important economic centre of the Yangtze basin, a key communications hub linking the south and north of Jiangsu province and a modern industrial and trading city.

Nanjing

Nanjing is the largest inland river harbour in China. Its geographical hinterland includes parts of four provinces (Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui and Jiangxi) of the lower Yangtze and about 12% of China's total population.

Jiangsu and Zhejiang are among the most economically developed provinces in China. However, Anhui and Jiangxi are comparatively poor. In other words, the market centred on and around Nanjing offers demand for both low and high-end products.

Hefei

Hefei is the capital city of Anhui province. The city's administrative area extends over 7,266 square km. and contains a population of 4.2 million people.

Now ranked among China's top 50 cities and one of the four key scientific and education bases of the country. Hefei has a developing industrial base and convenient communications including a major national railway hub and an international airport. The city is classified nationally as a "Grade A Opening City."

Wuhan

Wuhan, located in the middle of China, is the provincial capital of Hubei Province and a focal point for political, economic, scientific and cultural affairs for Central China.

Established in 1987 and based in Wuhan, the Economic Cooperation Zone features high-tech and new-tech industrial areas. Other priority development sectors for the Zone include the automobile industry, iron and steel, petrochemical products and building materials.

Chongqing

Chongqing became the fourth city in China to be designated a 'Municipality with Provincial Status'. The largest economic centre in the upper region of the Yangtze River, it encompasses an important industrial and commercial region. It is the transportation hub for Southwest China and a focal point for China's "Go West" development programme. During the last five years, GDP in the Municipality has been growing at over 9% a year.
